To many Western Christians, icons are a mystery. At first glance, they may seem disproportionate, awkward, or even weird. Yet icons speak their own “language” which, when understood, provides windows into heavenly mysteries.
CUF’s 2008 calendar, “Icons: Windows to Heaven,” explores those heavenly mysteries and explains how icons communicate the riches of the faith. Each month’s icon is accompanied by commentary from Fr. Thomas J. Loya, S.T.B., a Byzantine Catholic priest and expert on iconography. The icon images themselves come from Annunciation Byzantine Catholic Church, Fr. Loya’s parish in Homer Glen, Illinois (www.byzantinecatholic.com).
Through CUF’s 2008 calendar, Latin-rite Catholics can catch a glimpse into the heritage of the Eastern Catholic Churches. CUF’s hope—and Fr. Loya’s hope—is that “Icons: Windows to Heaven” will give all Catholics a greater appreciation of the beautiful heritage Eastern Catholicism.
